Henceforward… recorded at The Invisible Studios

Tuesday, June 21st, 2011

Henceforward, the first comedy by famed English playwright Sir Alan Ayckbourn, was recorded at The Invisible Studios. With a star studded cast including Jared Harris, Anne Heche, and Jack Davenport, Henceforward was a hit at LATW and BBC Radio 4. The play was directed by Martin Jarvis. Original music, mixing, and production by Mark Holden and Michael Lopez.

The play Henceforward… is the first comedy in which Alan Ayckbourn includes elements of science fiction. It concerns Jerome, a composer, who develops a plan to persuade his estranged wife Corinna that his home life is sufficiently stable for her to allow their daughter to stay with him. The plan involves both an actress and a gynoid (the female equivalent of an android).

Henceforward… was Ayckbourn’s thirty-fourth full-length play. It was first performed at the Stephen Joseph Theatre in Scarborough in 1987. It received its West End premiere at the Lyric Theatre on Shaftesbury Avenue in October 1988 where Jerome was played by Ian McKellen, (who was knighted in 1990, becoming Sir Ian McKellen). Corinna was played by Jane Asher. This production won the 1989 Best Comedy category at the Evening Standard Awards for London theatre.

Dracula by Bram Stoker

Tuesday, June 21st, 2011

Dracula by Bram Stoker was recently recorded at the Invisible Studios. Directed by Rosalind Ayres, Dracula is adapted from the novel to the stage. With appearances by David Selvi, Dracula was a sure fire hit. All production was done at The Invisible Studios.

Dracula is an 1897 novel by Irish author Bram Stoker, featuring as its primary antagonist the vampire Count Dracula. It was first published as a hardcover in 1897 by Archibald Constable and Co.

Dracula has been assigned to many literary genres including vampire literature, horror fiction, the gothic novel and invasion literature. Structurally it is an epistolary novel, that is, told as a series of letters, diary entries, ships’ logs, etc. Literary critics have examined many themes in the novel, such as the role of women in Victorian culture, conventional and conservative sexuality, immigration, colonialism, postcolonialism and folklore. Although Stoker did not invent the vampire, the novel’s influence on the popularity of vampires has been singularly responsible for many theatrical, film and television interpretations since its publication.

The Rivals with Lucy Davis

Monday, June 20th, 2011

The Rivals by Richard Brinsley Sheridan was recently recorded for LATW by The Invisible Studios. The Rivals was directed by Martin Jarvis and starred Lucy Davis.

The play is set in Bath in the 18th century, a town legendary for conspicuous consumption and fashion at the time. Wealthy, fashionable people went there to “take the waters”, which were believed to have healing properties. Bath was much less exclusive than London, and provides an ideal setting for the characters.

The plot centres on the two young lovers, Lydia and Jack. Lydia, who reads a lot of popular novels of the time, wants a purely romantic love affair. To court her, Jack pretends to be “Ensign Beverley”, a poor officer. Lydia is enthralled with the idea of eloping with a poor soldier in spite of her guardian, Mrs. Malaprop, a moralistic widow. Mrs. Malaprop is the chief comic figure of the play, thanks to her continual misuse of words that sound like the words she intends but mean something completely different.
